 "Good design, poor manufacture" 2010-08-15

What drew me to this HOTAS was the price/performance ratio. It doesn't look pretty, but it is very functional, and I never even bothered to install the programming software which would have given me 3 times the functionality (necessary to play Falcon 4.0 without using the clickable cockpit). The only lower priced offerings I could find were stand alone sticks which are not acceptable for moderate to hardcore sim games like Flaming Cliffs 2, Falcon 4.0, and FSX. Going beyond the X52 leaves two options: The X52 Pro (~$150) and the really high end HOTAS's like the G940 (over $300). As much as I like Logitech (I've never had any issue with a Logitech product), it's really hard to say that the G940 or similar controls outclass the X52 on paper. Without the programming software, there is an ample amount of buttons and hat switches for many sims. I can look around the cockpit, operate multiple avionics including complex radars, manage trim, flaps, landing gear, lights, air brakes, weapons, and communication. The programming software allows the use of the mode select knob on the stick. Each mode contains different control profiles; up to three total. This allows mapping multiple functions to the same button for true HOTAS capability. For example, if mode 1 is for take off/landing, the throttle hat switch could control flaps, landing gear, wheel brake, and lights. When airborn, select mode 2 for combat and the same hat switch could control the target selector on the radar or aircraft trim. Afterwards, switch to mode 3 for navigation and the hat switch could manage waypoints and autopilot.

Sadly despite its potential, the X52 faces a serious issue, reliability. Shortly after my warranty expired I noticed that the stick began to exhibit a tendency to roll to one side. The stick itself remained centered when I let go of it, but apparently it was sending an input signal. I confirmed it using the set up CD which allows you to monitor/adjust the axes, etc. When I released the stick, the screen displayed that my computer was still recieving a signal. Changing the center point would not fix the problem because the rolling input was random. Luckily for me, I found that unplugging and reconnecting the controller would fix the problem. As my warranty was out and I didn't want to spend money fixing something that I bought for price in the first place, I just kept doing this. My solution did not last though, and soon I found myself unplugging the controller multiple times per session. This could become extremely frustrating online where pause is not available and precision flying with other players is required. Still, I bore with it hoping that it wouldn't get any worse. For a while this was the case, but recently the rudder controllers started to produce the same random input as the roll axis, only more severe. Then finally, the stick stopped working altogether, leaving me without controls to fly my sims. It's really disappointing that such a great design suffers from such quality issues.

My experience with the X52 has done nothing good for my opinion of Saitek, but after asking around, it seems as though the X52 Pro has much better reliability. The X52 Pro, like the base X52 is much cheaper than a lot of other sticks without much loss in capability. I'm considering buying one, as going to any other good HOTAS will cost a lot more money.

 "Incredibly Configurable" 2010-07-30

Bear with me for a second... I need to prove a point to you.

---

I spent the evening with my x52 last night, mostly custom tailoring my new joystick to LucasArts' classic space fighter sim, TIE Fighter.

Saitek's software enabled me to configure the three-state mode switch to control preset power levels by way of "advanced commands" that allowed me to issue a string of commands when the state switches in and out. Now, I have 3 configurations at the flick of a switch.

The toggle switches on the base of the joystick function as memory addresses for ships I want to hop to quickly. Flick up to save a target, flick down to recall it.

I also have shields set on a "precision slider" that lets me flick my shields to where I need the coverage in a split second. Setting up an attack run? Shields full forward. Intercepted by fighter cover? Shields to cover my rear while I finish off my salvo.

On top of that, the pinkie trigger controls my engine booster system in a hold fashion, despite the game's design to use that feature as a toggle. But I also get the chance to use this system in a way never intended by the game designers: boosters feed off power from the laser banks, so in my commands, my boosters automatically set a higher recharge setting in my blasters to prolong speed booster at the expense of a little speed. I'm contemplating adding commands to dump energy from shields and tractor beams into laser banks to ensure I always have booster power available if I have the energy anywhere.

My next addition is to rig the two-stage trigger to switch into linked fire mode when fully pulled, again in a hold fashion rather than a toggle fashion.

---

So... why the major geek-out about how I set up my particular non-flight-sim game? The point is that this stick does its job very well, so well that the majority of my time so far is actually spent configuring the vast suite of control options Saitek has made available. All the complex commands that I would issue if I had ten hands and three brains are now at my fingertips. I feel like I opened up my starfighter and tweaked it to be uniquely mine. Once I finish configuring, I will have no reason to touch the keyboard, perhaps one of the highest compliments one can give a flight control system.

The joystick sticks like it needs oil and also has tooooo much freeplay & is verry hard to control the airplanes . I have sent 3 messages referencing these problems with no answer to what can be done with this Saitek X 52.

 "Needs Modification" 2010-05-14
By J. Heine (Corona, CA)
I couldn't seem to play any of my flight games effectively with this stick. The stick will not register pressure until you push it half way to its limit. It's almost impossible to make small adjustments this way. You're forced to have a "meat fist", flopping the stick back in forth, trying to keep something flying level. The magnets (or sensors or whatever), are placed in a way that makes the stick unusable.

It's an easy fix. You can find instructions online. But you have to open it up and mess around. When you see the magnets, it looks almost like a purposefully crappy design, on what would otherwise work great. The magnets are positioned in an obviously stupid way, and you just have to move them. It didn't require any soldering.

I don't see how anyone can use this stick without modifying it. I'm not the type that has to mod everything, but I had no other choice.

I gave this stick 3 stars because it works great after it's modified. Otherwise it would have gotten 1 for being defective in design and unusable.

I do recommend this stick if the price looks good and you don't mind modifying it.

I have heard that the "pro" version of this model has the same problem.

"Good so far but some issues though" 2010-05-09
By Dryzzt (Georgia, USA)
I like the X52 but for some reason it will not calibrate the joystick to the center, it is stuck in the uppewr left hand corner.

Also, there is no printed manual included, just a dvd and a flyer for the Saitek pedals.

In addition, going to the Saitek website to DL game profiles for FSX and Falcon 4.0 is a pain b/c they do not tell you how to install these profiles. They point you to their forum but trying to search their forum is impossible and fruitless.

I will update this as soon as I get this thing firgured out.
