 "Great ideas, poor performance" 2010-09-19
By Remjin
I've been using this mouse for 9 months now. I received it as a Christmas present in 2009. The experience has been mixed, to say the least.

The good stuff: I like how the mouse feels, it fits my hand pretty well, even though I have medium sized hands. I like to have a broader grip, and I no longer have to drag my pinky around while gripping the smaller mice. I love the placement of the thumb buttons and the ability to change DPI can be useful in a rare case. The scroll wheel is pretty nice, since it doesn't exactly click but gives you a measure of how much motion it has gone through. Its easy to whip it up and down and really go through a document or page. The feet have held up really well and its kept really clean and has endured my sometimes spastic button pressing very well. In many ways, this mouse would be perfect except for one little problem, which I'll explain shortly.

The "Meh" parts: I'm not really sure what all the weight stuff is supposed to do. I like my mouse light, so there's really no point in the weights for me.

The Bad: Tracking issues. Apparently this mouse is noted for having trouble with cloth on mouse pads, but it has issues on my table-top and every other surface so far. Its bad enough to make it unresponsive and inaccurate, with wavering when tracking a line across the screen, which makes it hard to shoot as accurately in FPS games and can sometimes be problematic in other games as well. Sometimes, it just stops working for a while and won't track in certain directions. I'm not sure what the issue is, exactly, but I've kept all my drivers and software up to date and its been a bit disappointing. I actually moved "up" from a basic logitech gaming style mouse, and this has been disappointing. I've always had good luck with MS Mice in the past, so it is kind of a let-down. They can't all be winners, I suppose. Not a bad mouse, as a whole, but if they just fixed the tracking issue than this would be a nearly perfect mouse for me.

"Excellent gaming mouse for claw-grippers" 2010-09-15
By Josh B.
I've owned the Logitech G500 and Razer Deathadder, as well as many other non-gaming mice, and this is my favorite out of them all; primarily because of the Sidewinder Mouse's larger frame. It takes a bit of adjusting to the grip style, but the larger contact area is excellent for using your fingertips to make small, accurate shifts. I use 10g of mass and the white feet for a very light, slick mouse that is easy to move and stays stable on the pad.

The primary buttons are solid and the long "paddles" give it a totally natural click feeling with a consistent force. I strongly prefer the over/under side buttons as opposed to the fore/aft buttons most mice have, but their click isn't as nice as the G500 or Deathadder. The metal mouse wheel feels great compared to other plastic or rubber wheels, but the edges can be a bit sharp.

I've only had two problems with it: First, the original and the replacement have had their middle buttons stop working after about a year, prompting me to have this one replaced with a Sidewinder X5 in the hopes that it uses a different button. Second, the side buttons can get rather dirty, with the silver paint flecking off a bit and the edges collecting dead skin. I usually stop and wipe it off with a paper towel every week or so, but it's noticeable after you've used it for a while.

"It's not perfect, but it's pretty good." 2010-08-13

First the cons so you know what to beware of:

- The programmable buttons don't have the option of just being extra mouse buttons, like button 4 and 5. Instead the software gives you the option of reprogramming them to be other keyboard bindings like alt, backspace, and a few other slightly gimmickey buttons. I programmed mine to alt and middle-mouse so I don't have to click the scroll wheel.

- The 'Macro' button, lets you program in a series of button-clicks that can be launched, but it's located in a very awkward position. I just ignore it.

- The mouse IS pretty big. I have big hands, I thought this would be no problem. It's not, but I think if this mouse were any larger it would be unusable. It's taken me awhile to get used to.

- There are two pointless red LED's on the back of the mouse that serve no function. Not a big con, but it's silly that the laser it uses emits no light, but they slap two red LED's on the bottom anyway.

Pros:

- Despite the drawbacks of the extra buttons, I do find myself using them when I play games.

- It comes with three sets of mouse feet, black is the slickest, while white drags a little, and grey is in between. Very nice feature

- The weights. I like my mouse pretty light, I've been gradually increasing the weight to see how I like it. The customization is nice.

- The cable holder. At first I almost just chucked it, but it's actually been very useful for holding my mouse cable away from my keyboard. It's definitely a keeper and it stores the other weights and mouse feet.

- The DPI switches. I don't use the other two. 2000 DPS is just fine for me, but clicking the other will instantly slow the mouse down. Not bad for very careful sniping.

"great gaming mouse, slightly larger than the norm" 2010-08-11

great compliment to my sidewinder x6 keyboard.

is a little larger than i was used to, so using the scroll wheel took some time because it was a good 1/2" further up. mouse is big, but again, gotta get used to it. love the feel and the weights, even though i dont use them. i use the weight box to hold my headset wire instead of the mouse. its a quality mouse.

my previous mouse was a ps/2 wired vaio mouse, rollerball, very basic. used it for 8 years and could shoot you in the face in a split second with it. this mouse had a slight learning curve, but its amazing and recommended.
